Coi needs your help

Ok so maybe i’ll get some flack for this but i’m going to give it a shot anyway because I am so close. About 3 months ago I was robbed and my laptop (macbook pro), iphone, 3 hard drives, headphones, etc was taken. This happened after I dj’d at a shaddy club, dive bar I should say in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver, Main and Hastings to be exact. I managed to suprememly fuck up and have my back up hard drives on me because the venue wanted me to play request shit which was only on this one drive. On this drive was mixdowns of my album which i’ve spent 2 years working on.

So anyway I’ve been trying really hard to save up enough cash and I’m almost there but I still need a couple hundred bucks. So this is my plee help me make music again.

Send email transfers to coitax@gmail.com whatever you can spare. Its really appreciated. Don’t hate me for using social media.

Movember Contest

The great people at my work are donating $500 bucks to the person with the most votes Mo space. Its super easy and pretty much dumb of you not to enter if you already have a Mo space. You could get another $500 and if you don’t you’ve still made everyone more aware of a serious issue. This is a well done contest with humour and love at the heart of it.

Analog Heart says “Wear your beats”.

In this over-saturated fashion faux pas sub-culture that exists within the electronic music scene, with its vain attitudes towards fashion and its sheepish followers,  Clio D forges her own path.  When it comes down to it, art is best when it conveys depth in a simple yet beautiful package.  Less is more. Well the Analog Heart founder and principle conceptualist has done just that.  Each rare piece of color 45rpm record is finely crafted and sanded down for a reflective (charlie) sheen.   For those who wish to wear a memento of the analog realm, a time when there were no digital hicups.   A dj spinning records would maybe skip or scratch a record, yet that would not crash the computer because THERE WAS NO COMPUTER. Prevent the digital crashes in your life with a custom or pre-rolled Analog Heart vinyl art piece.

Check out some of her unique creations here at here new Website or Facebook page that has all the pertinent info to buy her dope creations that will leave your friends drenched in desire.  I’m pretty sure you should stay in a group when you rock this bling cause otherwise you could get jacked by a crackhead for your Analog Heart.

Belgian Fries on the drive.

Hailing from the Eastern Townships of Quebec, I know poutine.  Whether gorging on crappy ingredients which make up a delectable poutine at Valentines, falling over myself at the selection at La Belle Province, stopping off at random greasy spoons to get my fix of fries, chicken gravy and chewy curd cheese; I was always satisfied.  This was not the case at Belgian Fries. Proclaiming to be “the best poutine in BC” I was shockingly  dissapointed. Not only at the poor service but what genuinely seemed to be a lack of knowledge regarding the assembly of a proper poutine.

THE CHEESE CURDS

The poutine expert here decided to put some chesse curds on the bottom of the bowl underneath a handful of french fries; this my devout foodies is sacrilege. Needless to say I was chowing on cold UN-melted cheese curds to finish off my less than UN-desirable meal.  To top it off (not that the cheese on the top was any better) the curds were in no way squeaky.

To take a quote from montrealpoutine.com:

“The typical cheese curds are from the brand Frommage Beaucronne, and they must be absolutely fresh, made just that morning. Fresh curds are easy to identify, even to a novice, because they squeek, loudly and unmistakenably, when chewed. This squeeking is caused by their high humidity (47% is typical) and slight patina of oil, combined with their flexibility (which, again, is due to their high humidity) which causes the curds to slip and rub against the teeth. The squeek is unmistakable: if you aren’t sure you’re hearing it, you aren’t, and the curds you are eating are more than a day old.”

Now obviously I don’t expect them to get the cheese curds from the fucking church of cheese curds Frommage Beaucronne but c’mon where the hell is my squeak?   Ok enough about the cheese as I could go on.

THE FRIES

The fries an intergral part to the equation were of the dry variety. Crunch is good but hollowed out by oversaturation in the deep fryer equates to a crispy outershell, similar to a potato chip. If I wanted chips and gravy I’d buy a bag of Ruffles and smash them into a pile of mud.  Almost sounds like a tastier option at this point in time.

THE GRAVY

And here we go, the glue that makes it all stick together, the gravy.  It’s vegetarian. Nuff said.

THE END

In all fairness I wanted to share a link to some reviews. I honestly believe some people are completely blinded by marketing and aesthtic that they no longer pay any attention to their taste buds.  Here’s a subjective perspective on Belgian Fries, Subjective Perspective.  Just to sum things up a bit, this whole gourmet poutine craze that is going on is all for not; the poutine is not supposed to be made with top shelf ingredients its made with the correct shitty ones. You think St.Hubert gravy is good for you? No, duh. This is a meal that is crap for your body, henceforth it should contain crap ingredients. When you fuck with something that has a standard so low that bums on the streets of Montreal consider it a food group you leave it alone. You can’t raise the bar on shit, that’s how you get constipated.

Mem Rx Gets Essential 2+ Hrs Mix

Mem Rx has rolled out this epic mix in true dj style, one take, one sound, one man. Here’s what he has to say about the mix.

This is the mother load. 2 hours and 40 minutes of bass, drawing from every set I’ve played since 2007.

as with everything I put up, there’s no pre-programming, no sync-assisted triggering, no compression, no mastering, and no editing. it’s one take, as live as a DJ set gets. grab a controller, a laptop, my collection, a six pack each of duggan’s and flying monkeys, a big pair of monitors, and have at it. it’s not range compressed like your itunes might spit out a ke$sha tune, so you’re gonna want some big speakers and a loud amp for this one. this set contains music from as recent as this month to as old as the 40′s. BPMs from 115-206 (but mostly the 130s and 140′s). tracks and mixes played at venues ranging from ten friends in my living room to hundreds of people in clubs throughout toronto, to ten thousand people behind an illegal parade through the streets of toronto on nuit blanche.

some brief stats:

kit used
traktor scratch pro
ancient acer laptop running windows 7
various midi controllers all valued at under $200 on craigslist
tracks - 65
runtime –  2 hours 38 minutes
beers – 6
incredibly patient housemates who don’t mind lasers, fog machines, and 95 dB+ music at 4 PM on a monday – several

A Review of Non-reviewable Sources of Energy by Mark Cidade

Many kinds of energy sources have been viewed and re-viewed over and over throughout the ages but there is only one particular kind of energy that cannot be re-viewed! That is, once you see it, you won’t believe it, and upon disbelief you lose it forever. I will now attempt to explain. Watch me crash and burn, girls and boys. I saved you a front-row seat to this trafficked jam.

Okay let’s start with what I feel is a close-enough summary of what we already know (i.e., not much). Okay, so first there was the sun. Early hominids were born outside in the day and what they first saw was the sun hitting them as they were torn from their placental paradises. And man, it was hot andbright! Then there are the plants, which took the sun’s energy and stored it for later use, like when it’s night time. And then the herbivores were spotted to consume such green delights, so we dropped our bananas and vines and attacked some small beast. We ate its blood and we became that animal. Yum!

With all these plants barfing up more oxygen than we could suck up, fires were ignited. Bushes were burning! We wanted some, too. After we figured it out, it seemed to do some interesting things to our meat—less people were dying, it was tastier, smelled nice, and so much easier to chew! This heat stuff was really catching on. More animals were killed and eaten and sacrificed to the demanding so-called gods that the crazy shamans said were watching us.

This leads us over the cliff, to where the really fast animals were chased, another found source of energy—gravity! People were falling over it left and right, and all around. A new religion orbited the altar of the fallen ones. Cages in trees were rattled everywhere and hey, we no longer had to climb to get the fruit or sloths!

From the gravity of precipitation, another source rained upon our collective consciousness. A brain storm of new gods were brewed when thunder and lightning made its way onto the scene. People were dancing on their caves! It was the first drum & bass party ever. Electricity and sound was soon harnessed by those who were obsessed by these powers.

On and on these discoveries were made, to modern times what with our natural gases, subterranean oils, nuclear powers, and what have you. But is this all there is?

Hell, no!

Would you believe that what we consider the human emotion of LOVE is a viable source of energy? It’s true! This is where I fail to convince ANYONE. I know that this review seems all jokes and stuff but this last paragraph is more serious than a fundamentalist blowing away a woman’s brains for committing adultery (oh yeah—explosive chemicals are another reviewable source).

Let’s go back to the sun. It works on fusion based energy but does anyone really know how that works? It has something to do with particles being so attracted to each other from gravity and so hot through friction (i.e., electromagnetism) that these particles (initially hydrogen ions—singular protons) fuse together and release all this crazy energy that keeps that star, and everything in the solar system, alive. I’m telling you, brothers and sisters, that gluonic energy is love in its purest form. It’s hard for us to see but when we do, oh boy, there’s no looking back! We won’t need the sun after that because we’ll all finally have each other.

Amen.

The Glitch In the System – cirQlar – October 9, 2010

This party was cirQlar’s third installment for 2010 and it hit hard.  Having already set the pace and tone for the kind of parties they are trying to promote in the great city of Toronto with headliners such as Heyoka and Beats Antique, ‘A Glitch In the System’ was sure to leave party people breathless.

With not only 1 but 3 headliners in the main room at The Great Hall, a beautiful vintage theatre tucked in the west end built in the 1800’s, there was no shortage of top notch, high calibre bass music.  I had the pleasure of working alongside these promoters as the opening dj for the night in the main room.  My first impression as I walked into the empty hall was “WOW!”, they had really stepped up their game in stage design and overall decor.  The mastermind behind the white walled stage screen in which custom video was cast upon was none other than Rollin’ Cash, a veteran in party promotion/dj’ing in and around the Toronto area.  Aside from the eye catching visual effects, they were stopping at nothing by installing a full trapeze for some mid-show entertainment, a la Cirque du Soleil.  A strong emphasis on their robotic theme provided a very fun and engaging atmosphere to enjoy such world class music.

Enter Ill.Gates, a home town hero making waves internationally with his own brand of bass heavy glitch hop.  As this night was officially his Toronto album release party for his forthcoming record, “The Ill Methodology”, he brought absolute heat, flexing many of his new originals while peppering his set with fan favourites(personal special mention to the Missy Elliott bootlegs).

Mochipet came onto the sound system next and I had zero expectations.  He was working with a clean slate and he killed it!  The place lit up(not only from the bass sensitive lighting) as this bass crazy purple dinosaur tore us all a new one.  With grimey glitch hop and mid tempo heaviness, Daly City Records frontman and founder, Mochipet, stole the night for many sweaty and smiling party people.  He definitely caught my attention and I’ll be looking for more of his work in the years to come.

As if two headliners weren’t enough for your ears to handle, next up was the fireman himself; Vibesquad.  When I first heard of Vibesquad about 3 years ago with his heavyweight tune “Swivel” and after seeing him play twice at Shambhala this summer, my expectations were high.  The energy in the room was live and he cranked it up to 11!  Playing a set full of his unique glitch hop signature sound, my expectations were met and exceeded.  A truly kind individual with a bad ass sound, I look forward to giving a proper listen to his new album, “Fire” that was recently released on his own imprint, Vibesquad Recordings.

I’m a firm believer that a lot, if not all, electronic music is meant to be heard on a real sound system.  I’m not talking about your ‘rad new casio vintage hifi you bought to stroke your hipster ego’.  I’m talking  4 dual 18” subs up front with enough support on the highs and mids to catch the attention of your unborn child.  CirQlar delivered the bass and represented these artists well.

At this rate, we, the people of late nights and bangin’ bass bins, can only expect bigger and better things from this Toronto promotion company with a circus-esque twist.

Be on the lookout in 2011 boasting more west coast flava in ya ears!

SLOW DISCO DOKO MIX FROM CHINA

Some of you may know and love Jawbone founder of the most peace loving and violent sound crew in the tdot. Aside from being a bass aficionado he also has deep roots in Disco. Throwing caution to the wind he has created an alter ego known as DOKO. DOKO rocks out in the club to Disco-house-funk-ghetto-boogie-rave-juice and pushes the party to the next millennia.
Here’s a couple words from the man himself—–
Hi,
While in China I made a new person.  I am now to be referred to as Jawbone for dubstep and DOKO for this next thing:
I just finished mixing a 100 BPM disco mix.
…………………………………………………………..and Douchie-B is no longer.
So.. blaze a smurf.. or drink three beers on an empty stomach.. then listen to my mix. I am sending this to family and close friends.
(i have to say smurf in case the government reads your emails in China)
DOKO moves away from electro and back to the roots of disco music.  This return to analog and instrument based disco is Grant McKeown’s backlash to the synthesized sounds and fast tempos that permeate the shitty clubs of yonder.  With little fillers and relentless uppercuts DOKO delivers a knockout.  You can’t block this shit because you rarely hear strange aphorisms regarding boxing.
Enjoy the mix

Detox Eats Philly Cheese Steaks

Detox
works hard hence his alias Jobber. This man throws himself into his dj sets with random fist pumps, cut throat mixing, deep penetrating (that’s what she said) basslines and just an all out fun attitude. This guy is not your typical nice guy, trust me, he goes beyond nice and then throws you a curve ball of heavy bass. This mix is super eclectic but well selected. Not many people can bounce around the genre circle but Detox aka Philly Cheese Steak aka Jobber can out dj most dj’s in an all out dj war. So put your girl to bed and go for a run cause this man will get you hyper’er and you won’t be able to stand still. Stay on the lookout for Detox. Tdot’s finest.
